What to Expect...

Course Overview

Our new Level 2 and Level 3 Music Performance and Production courses are accredited by UAL (University Arts London). We are very proud to bring you these courses which allow you the opportunity to develop your skills as a musician, whilst learning about the modern music industry and your own place within it.

Throughout the course you will develop ensemble skills by rehearsing and performing in bands, you will have the opportunity to hone your songwriting and production skills, become more familiar with music theory and also record your musical creations in our industry standard recording studio.

There is something for everyone no matter what point you are at in your musical journey!

Preparing to Study

Essentials:

  • You should bring pen and paper to every lesson for note taking, song ideas, lyrics, assignment dates, track listings, timetables, etc.

  • We recommend using a pen drive/ hard drive or cloud account to move your work from computer to computer, as well as moving your project files and mixes from the studio to the Production Suite (311).

  • If you have your own iPad or laptop, they can be really useful for note taking and general use around college

Guitarists and Bassists:

  • Make sure your instrument is in good working order. Your instrument should be playable and clean. Change your strings, tighten any loose screws or nuts and fresh batteries if you need them.

  • Have a working and reliable jack lead. If your jack lead makes any popping noises or cuts out unexpectedly you should think about getting it fixed or buying a new one.

  • Bring a tuner so you can tune up quickly in a busy and noisy environment.

  • For the best performance, we recommend standing (not always essential), so make sure you have a strong and comfortable strap for your guitar or bass.

  • Always carry essentials such as plectrums, capos, a cloth for cleaning and spares of anything that can break such as jack leads, strings and batteries.

Drummers:

  • Make sure you have a good pair of sticks that aren’t likely to break or splinter while you’re playing. If your sticks are thinning, it may be time to buy a new set.

  • Have a spare set of sticks in case your first set break or get lost.

Singers:

  • A secure water bottle with a tight lid will help keep you hydrated and avoid soar or strained throats. It is essential that the bottle doesn’t leak, as water can damage equipment.

  • A note pad for lyrics and any other useful notes you need to make during a rehearsal.

  • It could be useful to have a warm-up routine prepared to avoid vocal cord strain and get the best tone out of your voice.

  • If you have your own mic, feel free to bring it to college for your personal use.

Keys Players:

  • Full sized weighted keyboards are available in each rehearsal booth at college.

  • It could be useful to have a warm-up routine ready to help with finger flexibility.

We also suggest that you set up personal YouTube and Soundcloud accounts (both free to do) that are just for your college work, as it is required that you share video/audio evidence as part of your assessed portfolios. It is also your first step into the world of self-promotion and networking!
